Transformation of the Day: Chelsea lost 83 pounds with healthy eating habits and exercise. When she reached a point where she was going through the motions and just existing, she knew it was time for a lifestyle change. She found strength, camaraderie, and guidance by joining local fitness programs.

What was your motivation? What inspired you to keep going, even when you wanted to give up?
When I reached my highest weight of 268 pounds in July 2019, I no longer knew myself anymore. For months I was going through the motions of my day-to-day routine. I was no longer living. I was just existing, and that’s what scared me.
I am a daughter, a granddaughter, a cousin, a friend, and MOST importantly, a mom to an amazing little boy. I wanted to grow in self-love so that I can thrive and be my best self in all aspects of my life for myself, my son, family, and friends.
That summer, I decided to make a change. While the journey has been REAL, what kept me going is the feel-good energy I now have all the time. When I eat right and work out, it always puts me in a great headspace, and I love that!

How did you change your eating habits?
I began by simply not eating junk food and not ordering take-out or eating fast-food. I cooked all of my meals at home. From there, I educated myself on nutrition and found a sustainable eating plan that works well for me, which was carb cycling. Typically, I carb cycle while intermittent fasting. Also, I set a goal for myself to drink a gallon of water a day.
I was coached on how to eat by my trainer Denise Bryers. I do better when I’m holding myself accountable to someone. Every day was not perfect, but consistency is key, so I would get right back on my plan.

What did your workout routine consist of? How often did you work out?
I told myself that if I could lose 10 pounds on my own, I would reward myself by joining a popular fitness community in my town that I greatly admired called Bootcamp Cincinnati, led by Denise Bryers. Once I joined Bootcamp, the weight started coming off.
I worked her program full out. I started training three days a week, which later increased to 5-6 days a week. My Bootcamp workouts consist of HIIT circuits in the evenings and strength training in the mornings. Each morning we focus on a different muscle group. Now, my lifestyle is at a point where I can work out ten days straight and not even realize it.

Recently, alongside Bootcamp, I joined FitnessQueen Royal Fitness, led by Charlestina Hyde. I have fallen in love with her program, as well! Each class offers something different. She brings fresh and new combination-power moves I’ve never seen before. When I finish her circuits, I feel so accomplished and unstoppable! It’s such a rush. My body stays challenged and continues to transform. If you couldn’t tell, group fitness classes are my jam. LOL When I’m not group training, I do cardio on my own. Typically. I walk anywhere from 3 – 6 miles. I also walk up and down city steps or do workouts on the elliptical.
What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
My starting weight was 268 pounds, and my current weight is 185 pounds. My goal weight is 150 pounds.

Is weight loss surgery part of your journey?
Weight loss surgery is not a part of my journey. 

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far?
Do not punish yourself for human nature. Even the most disciplined athletes have a bad day. Don’t stay stuck there because that’s what is truly damaging. Get back up and go harder!

What advice do you have for women who want to lose weight? 
To stay true to yourself. Only you can walk your journey, so make choices and decisions that’s sustainable for you. (Not because it’s popular.) The result is longevity and real lifestyle change!
Also, if you’re a people person like me, find your tribe! Seek out different fitness communities in your area, give them a try! Even though it’s YOUR journey, give your journey a home to live in and get to know the neighbors. There’s nothing like being amongst a group of black women who are actively working towards the same goal as you. It’s beyond powerful, it’s magical! See what I did there? (Black Girl Magic!)
