Transformation of the Day: Katie lost 54 pounds. Despite the challenges that she faces as an Emergency Room Nurse, a full-time grad student, and mom of two, she figured out how to shed the pounds. Peloton workouts, strength training, and maintaining a high protein diet are key aspects of her successful routine.

I am an Emergency Room Nurse, a full-time grad student, and a mom. I gained so much weight after the birth of my youngest son four years ago. In January 2020, I decided I couldn’t take it anymore. Despite all of the challenges I face, I lost 54 pounds from January 2020 to July 2020. I have never felt so great.

What was your motivation? What inspired you to keep going, even when you wanted to give up?
My motivation is my kids. At age 32, I was already starting to show signs of pre-diabetes and high cholesterol. I want to be around too see my kids and future grandkids grow up!

How did you change your eating habits?
I eat a high protein diet. I eliminated all soda/sugar/diet drinks. I only drink water, sparkling water, tea, and coffee. I increased my vegetable intake, and I log all of my food daily. Food-logging is a great way to hold yourself accountable.

What did your workout routine consist of? How often did you work out?
For the first 20 pounds, I did not work out at all. My weight loss was solely from dietary changes. For the remaining amount of weight, I utilized the Peloton app to get a good workout routine and eventually bought a Peloton bike. I ride 5-7 days a week for 30 minutes and do about 60-90 minutes of strength training per week.

What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
My starting weight was 209 pounds. I currently weigh 155 pounds.
What is your height?
I am 5’6″.

When did you start your journey?
I started my journey in January 2020. I went to see Hamilton in NYC with my son and best friend. When I looked at the pictures from that weekend, I could barely recognize myself. I realized how tired I was at seeing pictures of myself and feeling depressed.

Is weight loss surgery part of your journey?
No, I did not have weight loss surgery.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned so far is that to develop healthy, sustainable habits, you need help! This time around, I involved my family and friends by sharing pictures and small accomplishments along the way. I used social media and Facebook Peloton support groups to keep me motivated. Weight loss is hard, and it is so much easier if you don’t do it alone.

What advice do you have for women who want to lose weight?
My biggest advice for women who want to lose weight is to figure out what got you here, to begin with, and use it to get better. For me, I realized that my weak point was binging on sweets. On the first day of my diet, I walked around the house with a garbage bag and threw out every single sugary, delicious snack in the house. I realized that to be successful, I was going to have to hold myself accountable this time around.

Also, choose a diet that is going to work for you! If you like carbs, Keto probably won’t be sustainable for you. If you’re prone to binge eating, intermittent fasting might not be it either. If you hate meat, a high-protein diet might be tricky for you. Figure out what will work for YOU. Every individual is different.

No excuses! I have had every reason not to be successful. I am an Emergency Room nurse during this crazy pandemic working two jobs. I have two children, and I’m a full-time grad student at an Ivy League school. Regardless of how busy I am, I make time to work out and plan my meals. To be successful, you have to find the time to set yourself up for success, no matter how busy you are. You deserve it!
